How To Jump Start Your Career Search
Finding a creative career can be an exciting endeavor to undertake. If you are not already in a creative field, the thought of taking the first step towards that goal might seem overwhelming, but it needn’t be that way. There are several ways to be successful when you decide it’s time to jump start you career search.
Look at universities, colleges and career centers to see whether or not they offer classes or instruction in your career choice. Even if you feel as though you are already highly skilled in your field, taking a class or two not only provides you with extra skills, but it can also gain you important contacts. Learning institutions often have insider knowledge of job openings and a wide web of contact information for others in the field.
The effect of word of mouth is often underestimated. Tell everyone you can that your are interested in a career in your field. Be specific about what you do and what you will do, and make sure people have your contact information so if an opportunity arises they know how to reach you.
Specifically target companies in your career choice for jobs and opportunities. If no job openings are available, ask about internships or special projects you might be allowed to volunteer for. You many not get paid for volunteering, but you will on the company’s radar as a motivated and ambitious worker for when an opening does present itself, and again, you will gain valuable inside contacts and knowledge.
Sell yourself. Create your own webpage or blog about yourself and your skills. Welcome other’s comments about your work so you can improve what needs to be improved and gain confidence when your work is praised.
